Mari, or even Cheremis, occurs as language of the Finno-Ugric family. It has to the higher degree half a million speakers - Mari people.

Mari is an official language (together sustaining Russian) of the Mari El republic of the Russian Federation, with speakers likewise in the Tatarstan, Udmurtia, and Perm regions. These are the literary language, using the Cyrillic alphabet.

There are ii Mari languages: Hill Mari (in the minority) & Meadow Mari. A bit of Mari too speak Tatar.

Russian & Tatar keep close at hand strongly influenced Mari, especially Meadow Mari.
